The PEP Ecopassport, what is it?
Mar 1, 2022To act for a Sustainable Development, it is not enough to provide accurate and reliable information on the most relevant environmental indicators. Data shall be set according with Internationally recognized methodologies and validated by accredited third party verifier.“This is why Nexans is adopting the PEP Ecopassport format, validated by Bureau Veritas and making an effort – unique in the market - to publish more than 100 PEP, representing almost the totality of our building cables portfolio of the BG B&T Northern” said Vincent Dessale, , Senior Executive Vice Presidente B&T Northern BG & COO.
Interview with Philippe Mathieu - BG Engineering Director & Head of Building techno Center
Why a large project to produce Product Environmental Passports (called friendly PEPs)?
Because the project is a priority for Nexans CSR strategy and quite ambitious: to produce about 100 PEPs this year plus additional 30 PEPs next year it’s an heavy load. The quantity of data to collect is huge and most of these information are new for the plants who need advice and guidance. The BG B&T Northern dedicates one resource to support the Technical Managers of each plant plus the time of resources of the Sustainable Development Dept. providing advice on the calculation and registration procedures.
Can you briefly describe the procedure to produce a PEP?
The data collected by the PEP Writer (Christophe Brismalein) with the collaboration of Technical Managers are used to make the calculation which is then sent to Bureau Veritas for 3rd part validation. Once validated the file is ready for publication on the PEP Association website and upload to the Nexans PEP Library.
Our cable families are very similar. Should be easy to copy and paste data of different plants?
Cables which look very similar have very different environmental footprints because the different materials used, different efficiency and energy mix. The environmental footprint is the “fingerprint” of the product
Interview with Costantino Ambrosini – Sales & Marketing Director B&T Northern BG
How the PEPs are integrated in our CSR strategy?
PEPs are the tangible demonstration of our commitments for the Environment and of our huge expertise in management of environmental data. Nexans is considered a reference by our customers because we are in progress to cover the 100% of our power cables range: first and unique example among Cable-makers! That is strengthening the relationship with our customers in the moment which end-users, their customers, need these data to prove the reduction of their environmental impact.
How we will leverage this incredible and unique asset?
The Marketing community, thanks to the work done so far, fulfils daily the request of some evolute customers: in many countries in Europe, to participate to tenders for public constructions it’s mandatory to present the environmental evaluation of the product. Each BU is also preparing a convenient campaign to promote our CSR strategy: PEPs are at the earth of the campaign.
Why the layout of the PEPs was reviewed?
The idea was to compact the format - also defining a fixed number of pages independent from the type of cable - and to match the communication guidelines defined by the Group. The document is normally dedicated to experts, but it’s important to propose an attractive layout beside the quality of the data provided
